That word does mean a marrow - ie the vegetable - in Italian for example zuccini (the diminutive) means courgettes (in French) - I have bad memories of having to eat large marrow boiled to an insipid mash with Sunday dinner - which would be unthinkable here in France.

Here's another one. This was recited to Synge when he was on Aran, I don't know but perhaps his writings may have since been published in Irish, so it might be already there. He thought it was 'gibberish'.

They found the path and I found the puddle. They were drowned and I was found. If it's all one to me tonight, it wasn't all to them the next night. Yet, if it wasn't itself, not a thing did they lose but an old black tooth.

Would it be - Ach mura é féin ? for 'Yet if it wasn't itself'

I think this refers back to "it wasn't all one to them", and in Hiberno-Irish means "even if it wasn't", so:

'Ach murarbh ionann féin' (or 'fiú murarbh ionann').

'Mura' + copula past tense before vowel = 'murarbh'.

Why is there nothing after 'mura' in the Irish version?

Because I didn't know what to put or how to put it. - Go raibh maith agat. What I find surprising once again is that the original was obviously in Irish, but apparently we now only have the English version of it.
