The author posits that up until AD 250, pollen count data shows previously cleared forests to have re-grown, and then we see a 'population explosion', an increase in ringforts and increased soil erosion on hills.

That's not to say there were not 'proto-Gaels' here already, but the data suggests something interesting happening
