A quick question for the Irish: could you please tell me if you use overdot in consonants (like Ċ) in your handwriting?

Or do you always use consonant + h instead?

I'm not Irish, but from what I've gleaned from Irish friends of multiple generations, I think it depends on when the individual learned handwriting. I know people who grew up during the 50s and 60s, when using the dot was still pretty standard, who still use it in their handwriting (and prefer it when reading). Typically (at least in my experience) they prefer to use the old forms of the letters as well. Makes sense, as that's what they grew up with, and that's always going to feel more natural.

On the flip side, most people I know personally who grew up using the contemporary style find THAT easier (though some prefer to use the older style for aesthetic or traditional reasons).

Not much help, I know, but that's what I've gotten from conversations with Irish friends about this subject. Hopefully more will weigh in!

I write most of my letters in the seanachló (most of those I write to use the seanachló and some don't like the new spelling) so I have the overdot.

I personally almost never use the ponc séimithe (overdot) in my own handwriting. I would always just write the "h" from the Roman alphabet.

If I were making a shopsign/tattoo/epitaph, I would consider including it though.

Thank you all for the answers, I will not use the dotted variant now.
