This is frustrating. I volunteered, as I always do, to do this Sunday's Pentecost reading in Irish. I don't know what it is about this particular reading, but I'm having a hard time getting it to flow well. It's not the pronunciation...I have that no problem. It's getting it to flow smoothly. Would one of you who is more fluent than I (which is most of you, I suspect) be willing to make a recording for me, so I can get it in my ears?

These are the verses we're reading in different languages. They actually come from slightly different places in the Gospel, which doesn't help with the whole "flow" thing!

Nuair a thiocfaidh an tAbhcóide a chuirfidh mé chugaibh ón Athair --Spiorad na Fírinne a ghluaiseann ón Athair --déanfaidh sé fianaise orm.

D’inis mé an méid sin daoibh ionas go mbeadh cuimhne agaibh, nuair a thiocfaidh an t-am dó, gur inis mé daoibh é. Níor dhúirt mé na nithe seo libh ó thus mar bhí mé in bhur bhfochair.

The first bit we will each read individually in our chosen language. The second bit we'll all read simultaneously. The bits of the Gospel that lie in between will be read in English by the rector.

I don't know why I'm having so much trouble with this one. I read a bit of the Gospel in Irish every year on Pentecost. For some reason I just can't get this particular reading to flow naturally.

I've sent a file to Breandán to be posted. Thought I'd make it as I've not been around for a while Lughaidh is correct with the "níor 'úirt". I also prefer mar go raibh instead of "mar bhí" (I think that's a simplification of the caighdeán), but I bit the bullet in this case Mo Irish is a bit out of shape as I've lived away from home for the last year for college (and I've not been here )

Níor dhúirt in the Bible? since it's in Standard Irish with some Munster forms, i'm quite surprised.
Anyway, níor dhúirt is simply an attempt to write in a more-or-less standard way something that isn't standard, I think those who write "níor dhúirt" haven't understood what people really say when they say "níor úirt". They don't say níor + lenited dúirt, they say níor + úirt, because in Connachta and Ulster, the form "dúirt" is "d'úirt", the d' is the prefixed d' as before all verbs in the past that begin with a vowel (d'ól, d'inis, etc). And since you say "níor ól", you say "níor úirt".

And actually it's not even wrong to consider the d- as separate from the verbal form, because the d of dúirt comes from the Old Irish preverb "do" ("deir" is "do-as-beir", etc). It's rather "dúirt" that is something new...
There's no linguistical reason to spell "níor dhúirt", because nobody ever pronounces /N'i:r ɣu:rtˈ/.
I just guess "níor dhúirt" is more acceptable to the eyes of Standard Irish lovers than the real form "níor úirt"...
