Can I suggest that you approach the original publisher/author with the suggestion? They may be interested and that route would certainly avoid the ending up in prison situation!

Lughaidh: I am a retired lawyer, but I will do my best to come get you out of prison should you end up there. I like the suggestion given: call the publisher, offer your services, and you may end up with a product that meets the "Donegal Objective" and makes you a nice sum of money. It's worth thinking about.

And remember the little people from ILF when Hollywood approaches you wanting to make a blockbuster out of your work!

Of course, it would need subtitles and not just for the non-Irish speakers..........!

I know it is not exactly the same thing, but "Learning Irish" has been translated into Japanese. That would suggest to me that the publishers might be interested in parallel projects like a Donegal Irish version.

My "specialty" is Connemara Irish, particularly Cois Fhairrge dialect, but I can also speak Ulster and Munster Irish with native-level pronunciation.

Pretty much the same thing to the likes of me! Ulster Irish (all variants) seem very different to Southern ears. A number of years ago, I went into an Cultúrlann i mBéal Feirste. I was buying a few books and cards and had my simple requests rehearsed in my head before I opened my mouth. I have no doubt that I sounded confident and competent. When the girl behind the counter answered, I didn't understand a word. To my eternal shame, I ended up muttering that I needed her to say it in English..... Japanese - Donegal/Ulster Irish? Yup! I can see the same problems for some of us!

One of the problems is that if you went to school in Leinster, you probably experienced teachers with Connaught and Munster Irish but not Ulster Irish. That may well have changed since my day. I know, for example, that in the aural exams, all three main dialects are represented, which hopefully will result in students not fearing Donegal Irish in quite the same way as some of us.

My translations are usually GU (Ulster Irish), unless CO (Standard Orthography) is requested.

Thanks, but Irish is only one of the hundred different languages you know. It is half of the one and a half that I know!
