That's a very good point!
I definitely trust the person who taught me that gort is a tillage field.

Actually this sounds like a Cork/Kerry thing to me. In Cork, gort is a tillage field, while páirc is a field, in Kerry gort is a field while páirc is a large field heavily covered with grass.

Out of interest, since it was mentioned above, Gorta used to be feminine in all dialects, i.e. an ghorta.
