These are a series of quotations from primary school children in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales - it must have been part of a literacy project sometime ago - that have been put into bookmark form in a teacher's magazine.
So how would you say - I wish that...? Is mian liom go raibh...?
Here are the phrases -

I wish I was the fastest reader in the world.

I wish that books were magic and whoever read them became part of the story.

I wish there were books that when you opened them the characters would jump out.

I wish I had met Roald Dahl before he died.

I wish I had lots of time to read.

I wish I could fly into a book.

I wish everyone could read at level 4.

I wish I could read every book and know every hard word in five minutes.

(our family computor has been out of order for the last couple of weeks - is mise anseo arís )

I think a few of them would probably be rendered by the subjunctive, children's speech is always difficult to translate, especially something like this which looks as though it was an exercise to complete a sentence using "I wish".

From Foclóir -"I wish he would come! is trua nach dtagann sé! "
That's a good way. Like in Bean Pháidín - Is trua ghéar nár mise bean Pháidín.

You could also say -
Ba bhreá liom (a bheith)....

or -
Faraoir nár mise...
Faraoir nach bhfuil... etc

I'm sure there are other ways too.

Hypothetical and retrospective wishes seem to be unnatural in Irish, so only regret is expressed.

Sorry, that wasn't my intention at all.

...Erm... isn't any restrospective wish a regret? "I wish I'd stayed home... I wish I hadn't drunk so much... I wish I hadn't decided to drive home..." None of which matters to St Peter.

Ba bhreá liom is mise an léitheoir ba thapaidh ar an domhan.

In English, technically you'd want the subjunctive ("I wish I were the fastest reader in the world"). In Irish, this is one for which I'd definitely use something along the lines of "Is trua."

"Is trua nach mise an léitheoir is tapaidh sa domhan." (following the pattern of "Bean Pháidín," as Bríd mentioned).

Wait for more on that, though.
